The Girl in the Heart Shaped Sunglasses
I like blogging about works in progress because when you do it in retrospect it seems like you have run out of steam in a way? Though of course I'm always happy to talk about any project anyone wants to know about.
I blogged last year about how I was writing something inspired by Sue Lyon as Lolita. Since it's the summer and I have more time for writing I have picked this up again. What I'm writing is intended to be a haunting take on Sue Lyon and her experiences in starring in and promoting Kubrick's film. She embodies the character and is haunted by her. It has taken awhile for me to figure out my angle on this material which interests me a lot. So I think it's worthwhile following through and completing this project. Sue Lyon was one of the girls on film that I left out of We Speak Girl so it's time to write about her.
I also wrote a short prose piece inspired by Elizabeth Siddal. I'm reading Essie Fox's Elijah's Mermaid right now. I'm pretty obsessed with the Victorian era as I'm sure you know. I can't wait for Effie this year.
In other news, I finished reading Twilight and watched the first film. I just wanted to have an opinion on them. I'm not filled with outrage at them - if you go into them expecting some kind of typical vampire story or something sensual you'll be dissapointed, but they are kind of fun romances? yet depictions of unhealthy romances. I also think Kristen Stewart is great. Bella Swan is an ambivalent girl character. I'm kind of surprised she is looked down on for being one in a way and not celebrated in conversations about the girl. I don't know. It's perhaps more complicated than it need be, but it's a cultural phenomenon. I still need to read The Hunger Games. I have the book on my pile. Sometimes I'm a bit behind on the things people are discussing on the internet and then come in really late with a half baked opinion.
I'll stop rambling for now, but I think that one of my 2013 resolutions will be to write more on this blog. It has been sidelined a bit in 2012 that is for sure.

Happy happy new year!!!!
May it be filled with wonderful moments and exciting adventures.
Best wishes love V
happy new year! i think you'll really love 'the hunger games'- it's smart and strange and brutal and very, very interesting. also, addictive. i never read the twilight books but have seen all the movies, save the most recent, and it seems to me that edward's relationship to bella borders too much on the stalker- inspiring mostly feelings of fear in me, not romance. but when i was a pre-teen i read the vampire diaries books and LOVED them, so, i get the whole vamp thing...look forward to hearing about yr new projects! xox
Vanessa - Happy New Year to you too! I have been enjoying reading about your travels these past few months - all the best finding a new home in Dunedin. Miss seeing you! xo
Gina - Happy New Year to you! I'm really looking forward to The Hunger Games - I haven't seen the movie yet either.
The first Twilight book and movie were very similar, I thought. Though the movie does play up the 'thriller' feel a bit more. I do agree about Edward. It was really creepy how he watched her sleeping and could be in her room at any time. There was a certain feeling in the book - for instance the passage where she gets lost in the city and is followed by those men that it was nice that she had someone looking out for her in a dangerous world, but the line between protectiveness and possessiveness is a fine one. I'm interested to see what happens when Bella becomes a vampire too.
I never read vampire diaries. I was obsessed with Buffy the Vampire Slayer as a teenager though. That was my kind of vampire series!
I'm keen to hear more about your upcoming projects too! xox
Yay, Buffy gets a mention!
I felt disturbed by the Bella Edward needy/feedy relationship. I much prefer the Vampire Diaries. But I think it's time for some good Victorian Pre-Raph inspired vamps. I have to say, I found the original Dracula a hoot.
Love reading about your work in progress! Thanks for the update :)
I'm just watching the Buffy episode The Witch tonight as I promised to write a poem inspired by it for something!
Yes - that relationship is pretty toxic. I love watching old vampire films on You Tube sometimes. I haven't seen Dracula but The Vampire Lovers and Blood and Roses are two adaptations of the Carmilla story I have seen in the last year.
Carmilla's such a great story!
