I've mentioned this wonderful book previously, but here are a few further thoughts.
Release details:
Kate Durbin
FASHIONWHORE
Legacy Pictures 2010
Military looks, ski bunnies, religious dress, homeless chic, inappropriate brides. These are just a few of the looks in Kate Durbin's latest chapbook.
FASHIONWHORE was sold over a period of one week only. Los Angeles pop-up press Legacy Pictures moves at the speed of fashion and has already mutated into WRATH OF DYNASTY. You had to be in quick to get this book and I'm so glad I did.
FASHIONWHORE is an exciting follow up to Kate's first full length collection The Ravenous Audience. Though it is quite different, it still very much deals with themes such as women and the different roles they play in life. In FASHIONWHORE, this parade of changing costumes is explored through a text that draws from recent fashion shoots for magazines such as Elle and Vogue.
Durbin's text is drawn from the illegal fashion editorial website Fashion Gone Rogue. The fact that these are illicit commentries on fashion, hints at the subversive nature of the chapbook which I also read as a celebration. It may be a critique of clichés, but it is far removed from criticisms of fashion and the women who are interested in it as frivolous. Durbin reveals fashion to be serious, high art, popular culture, kitsch and everthing in between and in doing so has produced some seriously good writing. Definitely recommended if you get the chance to read it!

Sounds really good.I'm always the last to find out about the fab books/music/etc etc!
I must say,I love your style of writing, and enjoy reading your blog!
Thanks! I'm glad you've been enjoying the things I write about.
I suppose the thing with limited edition books and records too is that if you're not in quick you can miss out, but I don't think they are trying to exclude anyone.
What an awesome cover image, too.
Sounds brilliant.
Kate made up a few of these images to go with the book which she posted on her blog. They are great, though quite seperate from the book itself which is all text with no images.
Wow, that sounds really interesting! Will definitely keep my eyes peeled:)
Yeah, this chap is gone, but there are two more books coming out soon - the chapbook Kept Women and the collaboration with Amaranth Borsuk - Excess Exhibit. I love what I've read of those so far.
